MPIGI – A prisons officer attached to Mpigi Government Prison has been arrested for losing a gun to a thug while allegedly busy on social media.
According to police, Hadijah Katono was overseeing prisoners as they worked in a farm when a man emerged from the bush and grabbed the gun from her as she was busy with her phone. The attacker is said to have taken advantage of the fact that the warder was alone yet it was drizzling.
Mr. Joab Wabwire, the Mpigi District Police Commander, said efforts to recover the gun, an AK-47, have remained futile.
“It’s unfortunate that we haven’t recovered the gun (AK-47) yet. Our preliminary investigation shows that the prison wardress was on WhatsApp before the attacker stole the gun from her,” he said.
Residents have raised concern that the gun could be used to terrorize them in the near future.
This is not the first time guns are stolen from security officers. In August, Police in Sironko District recovered a gun and other deadly weapons from the house of a suspected thug at Bushikori village in Bukulo Sub County. The suspect had been on police wanted list over robbery and murder charges.
According to Police, the recovered gun was stolen from a police officer on June 25, 2017 when unknown thugs attacked Buyobo Police Post in Sironko District.
