KAMPALA — President Museveni has during a campaign tour in eastern Uganda named and praised the top taxpayers who have contributed to the economic growth in the country.
“With the peace in the country, we have attracted foreign investors who have created jobs and also pay a lot of taxes”, he said.
Once again, President Museveni has named telecom giant MTN Uganda as the top taxpayer, with annual expected returns of UGX 701b.
The telecom company is followed by Airtel with UGX500b, and the Bank of Uganda (BoU) with UGX 451b.
Other major taxpayers include companies such as Vivo Energy, Total Uganda, Nile Breweries, Uganda Breweries, Bidco Uganda and Stanbic Bank.
Museveni added that, in the last 34 years of his regime, the tax collection increased from UGX 5b to UGX.21 trillion.
Charles Mbire, the Chairman of MTN Uganda, said that the company will continue investing and putting new products in the market in order to sustain its position as the leading taxpayer.
He also added that the taxes of UGX 701b include the income tax directly paid to Uganda Revenue Authority, Value Added Tax, and the satff’s Pay As You Earn returns. Once again, Mr Mbire insisted on the importance of doing business in a transparent manner and being above board.
“We have always insisted on corporate governance, transparency and good planning to ensure our income keeps growing and hence higher taxes. We are going to invest more money in the network in order to expand to more areas in Uganda. We will also introduce new products which will help the country and the people to get better serviced”, he added.
