The Ugandan long-distance runner, Joshua Chetegei produced a fast run in the final 800m to win Gold in the Mens 5000m at the Olympic stadium in Tokyo on Thursday, August 06.

Cheptegei who had failed in his bid to win Gold in the 10000m, settling for Silver, crossed the line in 12:58:15.

Canada’s Ahmed Muhamed and Paul Chelimo of the USA finished second and third respectively.

Cheptegei’s compatriots Jacob Kiplimo and Oscar Chelimo were 5th and 16th respectively.

This is Uganda’s second Gold medal at the Tokyo games after Peruth Chemutai also won Gold in the Women 3000m Steeplechase earlier this week.

Uganda has now won four medals at this year’s games with Cheptegei and Kiplimo winning Silver and Bronze in the Men’s 10000m, last week.

The total tally of medals for Uganda at the Olympics now stands at 11.

John Akii Bua and Stephen Kiprotich also won Gold in 1972 and 2012 respectively.
