KCCA FC got their 2020/21 Uganda Premier League off to a winning start as they defeated Bright Stars 2-1 in the only day’s game.

Debutant Brian Aheebwa and teenager Sam Ssenyonjo netted for the Kasasiros while Joseph Akandwanaho scored the host’s goal.

Aheebwa who was signed from Mbarara City FC in the off-season, volleyed KCCA FC in the lead just after 21 minutes after receiving from Keziron Kizito.

He then set up Ssenyonjo to drill in from close range and see Mike Mutebi’s side race into a 2-0 lead at half time.

They could have increased their advantage further but Kizito shot wide from a good position, Stephen Mazengo fired weakly at Bright Stars’ custodian Benson Wagima and Hassan Musana failed to find the net from a header.

The stars also had chances of their own but were few and far between.

Joseph Janjali forced Charles Lukwago into a fine save from a free kick before Ronald Ngoobi and Ronald Ssempala headed over.

With time starting to run out, Akandwanaho headed in from Simon Ssemayange’s cross on 83 minutes to create a tense finale.

However, when presented with a chance to win a point for his side, Janjali could not sort his feet after beating Lukwago, condemning his side to defeat.

The win puts KCCA FC on course to retaining the title they lost to Vipers SC last season.

In their next fixtures, the Stars visit URA FC next Wednesday while KCC MA are at home to Onduparaka FC 24 hours earlier.
