AFCON Qualifier – Group B
South Sudan 1-0 Uganda
Nyayo Stadium, Kenya
Monday, 16-11-2020

The Uganda Cranes were subjected to their first loss of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers on Monday.

Johnathan McKinstry’s side went down 1-0 away to South Sudan in a match that was played at the Nyayo Stadium in Kenya.

Former KCCA FC and Vipers SC striker scored the only goal of the game in the 33rd minutes.

Okello who spent most of his playing career in Uganda’s top tier converted from the spot after Halid Lwaliwa committed a foul in the penalty area.

The penalty came two minutes after Uganda was reduced to 10-men following Khalid Aucho’s reckless foul.

Just like in the game on Thursday, where Uganda was lucky to beat the Bright Stars by a similar score line, the Cranes struggled to create chance.

Faruku Miya was the closest to scoring but his free-kick, midway into the second half, rattled the cross bar before South Sudan cleared their lines.

South Sudan also had Assad Musa sent off with 7 minutes to play but the Cranes could not come up with a leveler.

The result means Uganda drops to second in the group B with 7 points from four games while South Sudan remain rooted to the foot of the standings with just three points.

Burkina Faso are now top with 8 points following their 0-0 draw away to Malawi on the same day.

How the Cranes lined up

Denis Onyango (GK), Nicholas Wadada, Halid Lwaliwa, Timothy Awanyi, Disan Galiwango, Khalid Aucho, Karim Watambala, Allan Okello, Faruku Miya, Edrisa Lubega, Kizito Luwagga.
