Milan already started their season in the Europa League and welcome back Ante Rebic, but are still short in defence against Bologna.

The Rossoneri beat Shamrock Rovers 2-0 in Dublin for their first Europa League preliminary round tie on Thursday evening, with goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Hakan Calhanoglu. It’s unlikely either of them will be rested, but Rebic does step in for Alexis Saelemaekers, as he was suspended for that UEFA fixture.

There are still shortages in defence for coach Stefano Pioli, who therefore must count on Matteo Gabbia.

Bologna are dangerous on the counter-attack and will try to make the most of those defensive weaknesses with the pace of Riccardo Orsolini, Musa Barrow and Roberto Soriano. Gary Medel is suspended and Andrea Poli favourite to face his former club.

Milan have lost their last two season openers, against Udinese and Napoli, but have never in their history made that three years in a row.
