Mbarara City FC defeated Kakira United 2-1 in the first game of the 2019/20 Uganda Cup round of 64 on Monday.

In doing so, the Ankole Lions became the first team to reach the round of 32 of this season’s cup.

The game was played on Monday following a request by Mbarara City to have the fixture brought as they were still in Jinja following their Uganda Premier League game away to Busoga United this past weekend.

Solomon Okwalinga and Brian Aheebwa scored for Brian Ssenyondo’s side while Johnie Obonga netted Kakira’s only goal of the afternoon.

Mbarara City who were coming off a loss to Busoga started brightly with Okwalinga opening the scoring on 20 minutes.

Before the break, Aheebwa increased the visitor’s advantage to two, ensuring they held a healthy two-goal caution at halftime.

On 50 minutes, Obonga pulled one back for Kakira to set the tone for a nervy ending.

However, despite consistent attacks by the hosts who were roared on by the home fans, Mbarara held on to avoid a shock exit and progressed to the next round.

The Uganda Cup round of 32 which will be played throughout the week resumes on Tuesday with three matches, two of which will feature teams in the top tier.

Katwe United hosts Proline FC, Tooro United will be away to Star Light while  Kiryandongo Town Council and Kigezi Homeboyz will also do battle.

Proline are the defending champions of the competition having defeated Bright Stars on penalties in last year’s final.

The winner of the Uganda Cup represents Uganda in the CAF Confederation Cup
