Netball World Cup 2019

South Africa vs Uganda

M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool

Wednesday, 17-07-2017 @9pm

After a day’s rest, the Uganda National Women’s Netball team-She Cranes, returns to action on Wednesday at the on-going Netball World Cup in Liverpool, UK.

Vincent Kiwanuka’s side has so far been impressive as they finished second in the first preliminary Group stage after winning two and losing one of their three games.

On Monday evening, they defeated Trinidad and Tobago 57-54 to keep their hopes of reaching a first-ever World Cup semi-final, alive.

Their next game will be against the best team in Africa-South Africa and they will go into the contest knowing that only a victory will ensure history will be made.

“This is our first final at the World Cup 2019, noted Kiwanuka ahead of the game.

“We come up against a side that is ranked the highest in Africa and we need to be at our absolute best to win.

“With all that said, I have confidence in my girls and I am sure they can pull off a great victory.

The She Cranes indeed need to be at their best if they are to shock South Africa, a side ranked one spot above them in the INF rankings.

South Africa’s 66-38 win over Scotland ensured that they remain unbeaten at this year’s edition.

In their first four games against Jamaica, Fiji, Scotland and Trinidad, South Africa have won all of them.

They have also been dominate in their displays with only Jamaica coming close to denying them victory in their last preliminary round one game which finished 57-54 in favour of the Africans.

Despite both teams still having a game to play on Thursday, a victory for South Africa will ensure they reach the semis while for Uganda; a win keeps their dream of reaching the semis alive.

Uganda will look to tournament revelation Stella Oyella for inspiration. Her alongside Mary Nuba, Peace Proscovia and Rachael Nanyonga have been the back-borne of the team and will have to be at their absolute best if the She Cranes can pull off a major upset.
