AFCON 2019
Egypt 0-1 South Africa
Cairo International Stadium, Cairo
Sunday, 06-07-2019

Thembinkosi Lorch late strike was enough to send South Africa into the last eight as they dumped out Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in their home Africa cup of Nations.

Bafana Bafana prevailed 1-0 to stun the Egyptians at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday evening.

The South Africans showed plenty of attacking intent in the first period and had the better chances of the half.

Percy Tau and Kamohelo Mokotjo were both denied by Egyptian custodian Mohamed El Shenawy.

The Pharaohs’ best chance of in the first half fell to Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim Hassan ‘Trezeguet’ in the 24th minute when he was set up by Salah but his effort was tame and straight to South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

At halftime, it was goalless as the home side and record Africa Cup of Nations holders were frustrated.

In the 57th minute, Trezeguet had another decent chance when Salah picked him with a perfect ball but his shot went straight to Williams.

With only five minutes to normal time, Lebo Mothiba played a square ball to Lorch on the counter and the midfielder fired past El Shenawy to silence the fully packed Cairo International stadium.

South Africa will take on Nigeria on Wednesday 10th July in the quarterfinals of the competition.
