Kenya defeats Uganda to retain Elgon Cup

KYADONDO – Kenya ensured they retained the Elgon Cup thanks to a 16-05 victory over Uganda at the Kyadondo Grounds on Saturday.

Trailling 13-16 from the first leg, the Simbas produced a professional display to win the title for a fifth time in a row.

Billy Odiambo and Jacob Ojee combined for Kenya’s two tries on the day while Ronald Kanyanya cross the white-wash for the Rugby Cranes.

Uganda who were eyeing a first Elgon Cup triumph since 2012 startes erratically in the opening minutes but were lucky as Kenya never pounced.

After Philip Wokorach missed a penalty, Uganda took the lead when Kanyanya powered his way to the white-wash to convert the day’s first try.

Kenya’s response was quick and swift as Odiambo touched down at the opposite end to level matters.

Minutes later, Ojee converted a penalty to ensure the Simba’s led by 08-05 going into halftime.

Uganda returned from the break in inspired fashion but failed to make possession count and Ojee extended the visitors lead, converting his second penalty of the day.

Wokorach had a chance to reduce the deficit but put his penalty wide.

With time running out, the Cranes went all out to try an claim victory but all their efforts were put to waste as Ojee broke free to seal the game for Kenya, touching down for their second try of the day.

In the end, Kenya won the game 16-05 and retained the Elgon Cup.
