Ghana vs Tunisia

Ismailia Stadium, Ismailia

Monday, 08-07-2019 @10pm

Ghana and Tunisia will battle for a place in the last 8 of the Africa Cup of Nations, when both sides face off on Monday evening in the last 16 encounters.

The Black Stars topped Group F after holding Benin and Cameroon to draws before beating Guinea Bissau 2-0 in their final group.

Tunisia failed to win a single game in the group phase and progressed to this round as one of the best four third-placed teams to set up a meeting with Ghana.

With hosts Egypt and Morocco out after surprise defeats to South Africa and Benin respectively, there is an opportunity for others to stake their claim for the title.

Ghana are four-time winners of the competition, but their latest triumph came way back in 1982, whereas Tunisia has one continental title and they achieved this on home soil in 2004.

This will be the eight meeting between the two sides, the Black Stars have won six and the other ending in a draw. They last faced off on 13th January, 2013 in an international friendly, Ghana won 4-2.

Kwesi Appiah’s side have been eliminated in seven if their last 11 games in the knockout phase of the competition, after qualifying in five of their previous seven.

The Tunisians have also been eliminated in their past five knockout games in the Africa Cup of Nations, their last success beyond the group stage being the 2004 final against Morocco (2-1) when they hosted the event.

Ghana will have their hopes of progression in Jordan Ayew who has netted twice in this year tournament alongside his brother Andre Ayew, Baba Rahman and Thomas Partey.

Alain Giresse coached side will bank on Saint Etienne attacker Wahbi Khazri alongside Anice Badri and Youssef Msakni for a remarkable victory.
