AFCON 2019
Mauritania 0-0 Angola
Suez Stadium, Suez
Saturday, 29-06-2019

Angola and Mauritania played out a goalless draw in their Group E encounter played at the Suez Stadium on Saturday.

The game was played in a cautious manner by the two sides with chances coming far and between.

However, Angola thought they had won it late when Geraldo rattled the back of the net but his effort was correctly ruled out for offside.

The Sable Antelopes also saw Wilson Edward spurn a glorious chance as he fired wide after he was set-up by Gelson.

After a spirited 1-1 draw with Group favourites Tunisia, Angola were expected to take care of business on Saturday but their performance left a lot to be desired.

In a game in which Mauritania played their hearts out, Eduardo headed over a Geraldo cross earlier in the second half in one of Angola’s best moves on the day.

Mauritania will also go back with a lot of notice as they made it difficult for the more superior Angola.

Having lost 1-4 to Mali in their first game, they started slowly but grew into the game as it wore on, ensuring they register their first ever point at the continental finals.

They got chances of their own but Adama Ba and Diakite could not apply the telling touch from promising poistions.

Mauritania still have an outside chance of reaching the last 16 but will now have to beat a desperate Tunisia side in the last Group game on Tuesday.

A win for them will take them to 4 points and will pray that they are part of the four best placed teams that is if Angola beats Mali.

However, they can still qualify in second with victory over the North Africans coupled by Mali avoiding defeat against the Sable Antelopes.

For Angola, they will reach the last 6 with victory over Mali next Tuesday.

The other games on Saturday

-Benin vs Guinea-Bissau @11pm

Sunday’s fixtures

-Madagascar vs Nigeria @7pm
-Uganda vs Egypt @10pm
