LUGOGO – Riticia Nabbosa produced a breathtaking performing as Lady Doves stormed yet another final in Ugandan Women football.
The Masindi based side who clinched a showpiece spot in the FUFA Women’s Cup on Sunday, defeated Kampala Queens 1-0 on Thursday afternoon to reach the FUFA Women’s Elite League playoffs final.
Nabbosa was at the heart of everything for Lady Doves, putting up a strong overall performance en route to scoring the all-important goal in a fiercely contested affair at the StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo.
After she was fouled on the 25th minute, Nabossa picked herself up and was at the end of the resultant free kick, closely controlling the lofted ball and slotting it into the back of the net to hand her side a lead that they never relinquished in the end, to reach the final.
In the other semifinal of the day, UCU Lady Cardinals powered past Kawempe Moslem 4-2 in an entertaining six goal thriller.
Captain Maureen Kinavudori handed UCU a quick lead inside the opening minute, slotting in past Kawempe custodian Juliet Adeke after the Kenyan import was played in through on goal by Hassifah Nassuna.
Nine minutes later, Cissy Nakate added a second to make it 2-0 to the Mukono based side before Jackline Nakasi saw her shot deflect off Kawempe defender Rehema Adubango to increase UCU’s advantage to 3-0.
On 37 minutes, Anita Namata reduced the deficit to two with a fine finish but in the process, just set the tone for UCU’s fourth.
Nassuna, curled a free kick into the top-left corner and ensured the Mukono based side took a 4-1 lead into half time.
At the beginning of the second half, the defending Champions-Kawempe called for a double change with Nazizi Florence and Nanziri Rhoda paving way for Naddunga Sharon and Nakacwa Samalie. Naddunga managed to score the second goal for Kawempe in the 84th minute, one which in the end turned out to be a mere consolation.
Thursday’s development confirms that the FWEL will have a new champion on Sunday 2nd June at the StarTimes Stadium.
Kawempe Muslim who has won the title for four successive seasons will will face Kampala Queens in the third-place playoff match on Sunday.
The final will pit Lady Doves against UCU Lady Cardinals as the Masindi based side who are also in the Women’s Cup final, bid to seal a first ever double.
