Build-up Game
Uganda (AFCON) 1-1 Uganda (COSAFA)

Mandela National Stadium, Namboole

NAMBOOLE – As preparations for the upcoming COSAFA and AFCON tournaments continues, the two teams that are set to represent Uganda in the competitions squared off on Thursday.

In the build-up game played at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, the two could not be separated at the end of the day as they drew 1-1.

Much to the shock of those in attendance, Abdallah Mubiru’s COSAFA side dominated the early proceedings as they dictated the tempo of the game.

As a reward, Tooro United attacker Allan Kayiwa handed them the lead on 25 minutes.

Kayiwa was the first to react to a Mustapha Kizza corner and headed the ball into the back of the net at the near post.

By the end of the first half, the COSAFA team was in cruise control much like Mubiru’s coached sides always tend to be.

In the second half, Sebastien Desabre’s AFCON team drew level thanks to KCCA FC’s top scorer Patrick Kaddu.

The former Maroons striker pounced on to an Allan Kyambadde cut-back to slot in past U17 custodian Komakech who had earlier replaced Saidi Keni in-between the sticks.

Both side had chances to win the game but came shot on several occasions.

For Mubiru’s side, Express forward Michael Birungi shot wide off a Paul Mucurezi low cross and KCCA’s Nicholas Kasozi couldnot beat teammate Charles Lukwago as his goal bound effort went directly at the shot-stopper.

For the AFCON side, the trio of KCCA’s Allan Okello, Kaddu and Allan Kyambadde missed good chances to steal victory.

Both teams will now continue their preparations for their upcoming respective assignments.

The COSAFA side who are currently in camp at Sky Hotel in Naalya will have training on Friday at the StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo.

Mubiru’s side were invited to take part in the 2019 COSAFA Cup where they will feature as guests.

They will start their tournament at the quarter final stage and will take on Lesotho.

For Desabre’s charges who are accommodated at the Kabira Country club, they will also continue training on Friday.

The AFCON side is preparing to take part in the 32nd edition of the competition in Egypt next month.
