Junior Gazelles flagged off to Mozambique for World Cup qualifiers

The National U18 Women Basketball, Junior Gazelles side have on Tuesday morning, been flagged off to Mozambique.

The team is set to take part in the FIBA U18 Women’s African Championship to be held in Maputo, Mozambique from 10th to 19th August 2018.

“As a federation, we are looking forward to great competition in Maputo, Mozambique, said FUBA president Ambrose Tashobya.

“We wish the players and the coaches all the best.

National Council of Sports’ Galiwango Zubair urged the girls to give their best so as the nation’s flag is raised up with honour.

It should be noted that the Junior Gazelles were granted a wild card to by FIBA Africa to reach this stage after they finished second at the regional Zone 5 championship in Tanzanian earlier this year.

Uganda will be making their third appearance at the continental showpiece, after featuring in the 2008 and 2016 editions.

In Egypt-2016, Uganda came last with a 0-6 record – lost all the three group games to Mali, Tunisia and Mozambique.

The team succumbed to a 25-67 loss to Egypt in the knockout before losing to Madagascar and Algeria in the placement games.

The two finalists in Mozambique will qualify for the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup due next year.

The team will depart tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.

Egypt ? Zone V
Mali ? Zone II
Angola ? Zone VI
Madagascar ? Zone VII
Tunisia ? Zone I
Uganda ? Zone V Runners-Up/Wild Card
