San Francisco, USA – Uganda defeated Uruguay 38-28 to finish 19th at the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco USA.
Tolbert Onyango’s men went it to the game knowing that 19th spot is the best they could achieve after losing 17-20 to Chile in the Bowl semi-finals earlier in the day.
Uganda got off to a flying start inside a minute when Timothy Kisiga crossed the white wish for the game’s first try. Philip Wokorach scored the resulting conversion to take the scores to 7-0 for Onyango’s men.
Wokorach scored a try of his own two minutes later and so did Aaron Afoyrwoth on six minutes, a minute after Kisiga had scored his second of the night.
Just before half-time, substitute Pius Ogeno got onto the score sheet with a try of his own and after Wokorach scored the resulting conversion, it meant that Uganda led by 31-00 going into the last seven minutes.
Kisiga completed his hat trick straight after half time but it proved to be Uganda’s last try as Uruguay tried to come back with four trys and as many conversions of their own.
It was however too little too late for the South Americans as their near to perfect second half performance only saw them score 28 points hence losing 28-38 to the East Africans.
The result meant that Uganda had won two of their four matches at this year’s World Cup in San Francisco.
The first victory came on Saturday in the 24-10 drubbing of fellow Africans Zimbabwe in the Bowl quarter final match.
Uganda, the with ranked nation in Sevens Rugby finished third out of the four nations that represented Africa with South Africa and Kenya topping the list in 1st and 2nd respectively.
