UCU Lady Canons continued their fine run of form in the National Basketball League (NBL) on Wednesday night when they cruised to a 80-54 victory over Nkumba Lady Marines at YMCA Court in Wandegeya.
The Mukono based side who came into the game on a three game winning streak were dominant on the night, winning all three first quarters and before losing the fourth by one point.
UCU had a shaky start to the game, conceding the first points and in the process trailing by five (7-4) with just over three minutes played in the first.
They however regained control midway the first quarter on route to a 23-16 win after the first 10 minutes of the game.
Despite Nkumba showing some resistance at the start of the second, UCU powered their way onto a 23-9 second quarter victory and in the process, held a 19 point advantage by half-time with the score-board reading 46-27.
UCU showed signs of ending the tie early when they raced into a 5-0 lead at the start of the third and despite Nkumba enjoying some good spells; the Mukono based side won it 20-12 to take their lead to as many as 27 points.
In the fourth quarter, UCU made several changes, allowing their substitutes to get more minutes and eventually lost it (fourth quarter) 15-14 but it did not matter as they won the game 80-54.
Rosine Micomyiza led UCU in terms of points with 17 to her name on the night. Captain Vilmah Achieng (12), Sarah Ageno (16) and Esther Akwap (10) are the others that reached double figures in the winning effort.
Nkumba’s Brenda Akone top scored on the night with 23 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal to her name.
This was UCU’s seventh win in their first nine games and now move third on the standings.
For Nkumba, they have now lost seven and won only three of their opening 10 games this season.
