Buganda edged closer to a final appearance in the 2018 FUFA Drum competition thanks to a 1-0 win over Bukedi on Sunday.

The highly anticipated semi final encounter between the two sides was graced by the attendance of Princess of Buganda Kingdom Katrina Ssangalyambogo, the Guest of Honour.

URA midfielder Allan Kayiwa was the hero on the day when he headed in Yasser Mugerwa’s delicious cross on 61 minutes.

Second half substitute Hamis Diego Kizza had a chance to double Buganda’s lead late in the game but his effort went wide.

Bukedi and KCCA FC young star Julius Poloto was close to levelling matters from Mathew Odong’s cross but his last touch failed to hit the target.

Buganda’s experience throughout the team was evident as the likes of Robert Sentongo, Hamis Diego Kizza, Brian Majwega and Yasir Mugerwa all imposed them selves on Bukedi and controlled the game.

“We had the ability to win this game with more than one goal but we shall build on it in the 2nd leg, said Buganda coach Alex Isabirye after the game.

“We had many chances at goal and we wasted them.

“It was our first time to play Bukedi who are a strong opposition.

Bukedi province player Ronald Musana was chosen Man of the Match.

In the other game played in Arua, hosts West Nile and Busoga played out a goalless draw in front of a huge crowed that also consisted of socialite, Brian White.

Former Cranes striker Brian Umony had several shots on target but Kirinya Jinja SS goalkeeper Didi Muhammad was alert and denied West Nile chance to find the back of the net.

Shafic Batambuze was chosen as the man of the match for the fourth time since the start of the tournament.

The second legs of the semi finals will be played in a week’s time with Bukedi and Busoga hosting the games this time round.
