Ugandan team for East African Secondary School Tournament flagged off

The State minister for Primary Education and Wakiso District Women MP Rose Mary Sseninde has today flagged off the team that will represent Uganda at the 16th annual East African Secondary Schools Tournament starting today in Gulu district.

A total of 1080 students from 77 schools across the country are set to represent Uganda at this year’s event that will see them tussle out with other students from Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Southern Sudan in different sports disciplines.

Sseninde emphasized discipline and sportsmanship amongst the students representing the country and also assured them that the government will surely offer more support in the next events.

“I thank all the schools taking part in this tournament and urge the players to exhibit the sportsmanship spirit and a great deal of discipline throughout the event,” she said.

Sseninde said government has offered lukewarm support this time round but promised it will increase in future events.

The students will participate in different sports, including lawn tennis (boys and girls), table tennis (boys and girls), football (boys and girls), Rugby 7s and 15s(boys), Basketball (boys and girls), Netball(girls), Volleyball, handball(boys and girls), Athletics(boys and girls) and swimming(boys and girls).

The Ugandan team will be led by captain Dan Aboku, a student at Kibuli SS and Nalukenge Juliet of Kawempe Moslem School, who have both promised victory for the country.
