KAMPALA — Kawempe North Constituency aspirant Muhammad Ssegirinya has aimed a major dig at incumbent Latif Ssebagala — claiming that the MP who has represented the area since 2000 is determined to occupy the same indefinitely.
Ssegirinya who is the flagbearer for the National Unity Platform (NUP) was appearing on NBS Barometer alongside other leaders including Ssebagala and Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze.
Ssegirinya hit at Ssebagala — openly telling him that: “We should now be consulting him on how to run Kawempe North after 20 years of him as the MP. We can’t condemn President Museveni for over staying in power yet there are MPs who also overstay”.
The popular opposition leader who had a backup of social media commentators trolled the incumbent and vowed never to appear on the same show with politicians who feel it is okay to overstay in power with an excuse that it gives them seniority.
“I will never appear again on media platforms with some politicians who feel its okay to over stay in power. All they aim at is to keep their positions not the better Uganda,” he said.
He added: “If I wasn’t given the NUP flag, I was not going to protest. I was going to ensure [Robert] Kyagulanyi wins so that I become the Minister of Disaster Preparedness in his new government. That’s my area.”
Responding to Ssegirinya, Mr. Ssebagala who is underfire claimed he has received a lot of messages from people supporting his candidature mainly because of what he has stood for, for the 20 years he has been in Parliament.
“For most of those times I have been standing as an independent candidate and I have been elected by the people of Kawempe North and I have been winning with very high margins, ” he said, adding that “this is all because of my selfless and inclusive leadership”.
