KAMPALA – Kyadondo East legislator Robert Kyagulanyi has August 21, 2020 been declared sole presidential candidate for the National Unity Platform (NUP) in the upcoming election.
According to Kyagulanyi, the nominations closed without another candidate expressing interest.
“I am delighted by the confidence placed in me by all of you distinguished Members of NUP,” he said.
He further pledged not disappoint the electorate.
“We shall bring the crown of victory, by the grace of God,” he said.
Kyagulanyi further said while today is a day to celebrate, it places before them a challenge to renew their commitment to the struggle and begin working tooth and nail to conclude “mission.”
“We know that the challenges that lie ahead of us are enormous. The regime is getting more vicious and desperate. They are determined to do anything and everything to keep themselves in power against the will of the people. But we must be stronger and more determined to overcome any challenges and redeem our country. Victory is in sight ladies and gentlemen. Let’s get to work,” said Kyagulanyi.
The legislator added that, “It is of course rather sad that even after a successful nomination event, security operatives used brute force against our people who were peacefully escorting me back home. Ultimately, we shall overcome.”
On August 7, 2020 veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda showed up at the NUP headquarters and claimed to have collected expression of interest forms to stand as the NUP flag bearer to challenge Bobi Wine.
However, he didn’t return the forms as expected by as today was the deadline.
