KAMPALA – Makerere University has said they scrapped the evening programme under the Bachelor of Laws programme due to financial constraints.
About 35 students, who had applied for the evening programme in the academic year that begins in August, have been told to choose from the existing programmes; day and another dubbed the new executive programme, which will start in January next year.
And speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Dr Muhammad Kiggundu Musoke, the university’s head of communication and international relations, said the affected students had been informed earlier about the decision.
“I don’t want to call it scrapping per se but the students have been informed to choose from the available choices. We shall have a new programme we have called ‘Executive’ which will be run in a module form starting in January next year. The students will graduate at the same time with those starting,” said Dr Kiggundu.
The university leaders informed the affected students of the decision during a Monday meeting.
The move is a fulfilment of an earlier announcement by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, that the university was in advanced stages of abolishing evening courses.
He said colleges would be allowed to run evening programmes if they had the required space, staff and resources.
Under the executive programme, students will learn as and when they have the time.
