MOROTO – Police in Moroto district have raided a sugar store on allegations of unauthorised re-packaging.

According to regional police spokesperson Longole Mike, they received information that there were some people changing sugar from Mayuge sugar factory to Kenyan sacks.

“After receiving information, the OC station Moroto book out with his team and proceeded to the said place and upon arrival, they found the sugar in a store being changed to Kenyan sacks,” he said.

It is said that the suspects buy sugar from Mayuge sugar factory, transport it to their store where they start changing it from Mayuge sugar factory sacks to Kabaras sugar factory sacks, which is a Kenyan sugar factory based in Kenya.

“The total number of bags of sugar found in a store were 250, a generator and a machine used for sealing the sacks,” police said in a Tuesday statement.

Longole says they have since deployed to guard the store and also informed Uganda Revenue Authority – URA on the incident.

“A case of Counterfeit on products and trademarks has been opened at CPS Moroto Vide SD Ref:58/27/07/2021.”
