LYANTONDE – Assailants on Sunday night gunned down three members of the same family in Lyantonde district, hardly two months after a similar attack in the area.
Gunmen shot dead Francis Rwabagabo, 60 and his wife Kellen Nakato, 38, from their home at around 9 pm in Kaliiro Town, Kaliiro Sub County. A few minutes, the same assailants raided Rwabagabo’s in-law Leokadia Kizza’s home at Kaliiro III Village, located two kilometres away and also shot her dead.
The Southern Region Police spokesperson, Mr Paul Kangave, confirmed the incident.
“Our teams are already at the scenes and have recovered 11 cartridges; eight of them from Rwabagabo’s house. They are still gathering more information from residents. I am sure we are going to get to the bottom of this,” he said on Monday.
Residents who spoke to this website said they suspect Rwabagabo’s son only identified as Mwebaze, an army deserter to be behind the attack as they had some longstanding wrangles.
“[Mwebaze] has become a security threat in this area and I ask police to work with other security agencies to swiftly arrest him before he kills other people,” John Zziwa, a resident and speaker Kaliiro Sub County said.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Lyantonde Mortuary for autopsy while that of Kizza was still lying inside her house.
Murders have become common in Lyantonde of recent. In September, three members of the same family were shot dead by unknown assailants in Kakyaza trading centre, Kimuka Sub-county, Lyantonde district.
The three Justus Sendege 27 his wife Evelyn Ekyampayire 27 and a cousin to the man Robert Mubiru 40, were at there home which also doubles as a shop when the assailants struck.
In August, a 42-year-old businessman Bosco Lutalo, a resident of Kooki Ward C in Lyantonde was found murdered by the roadside near his shop Bosco General Merchandise that is located along Kanya Street in Lyantonde town.
