NYABWISHENYA – A suspected poacher has been shot dead by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesman Elly Maate said the suspected poacher identified as Kakuru, 28, years was shot dead by UWA rangers attached to Nkuringo Ranger Post in Nteko, in Nyabwishenya Sub County.
Maate said that the Rangers found 3 poachers along their patrol routine in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park along River Ivi where they confronted them and in the process, Kakuru was shot dead. The incident took place October 6, 2019 around 6:00 pm.
“One of the poachers was shot dead, another one was arrested while the third one escaped to unknown place,” Maate explained.
He, however, said that the ranger who is suspected to have shot dead the suspected ranger one Kaheru John was immediately disarmed by the UPDF who secured the scene of crime awaiting further scrutiny.
“The place is deep inside the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and our sister security forces from the UPDF have secured the scene,” he said.
Maate said that a case of murder by shooting has been registered at Rubuguri Police Station under reference number SD 09/06/10/2019 to help in further investigations.
This incident comes barely a month after a fisherman was shot dead by UWA rangers after they found him fishing in River Rushaya which is in the Queen Elizabeth National Park.
