KAMPALA- Police in Nansana have in custody a Makerere University student for allegedly faking her own kidnap with an intention of demanding a five million ransom from her friends and relatives.
The suspect has been identified as Jane Francis Nampijja 23, a resident of Nsumbi, Kyebando Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.
According to police report, Nampijja allegedly disappeared from her home on Saturday morning when she started sending messages to all friends and relatives using her phone, claiming was in the hands of kidnappers and that they were demanding five million shillings.
However, her relatives immediately reported the case at Nansana Police Station vide SD REF: 73/25/08/2018.
Following police intelligence lead the suspect was later found at Mark Cottages where she had rented a room.
Upon police interrogation, Nampijja said the ransom money was intended to facilitate her planned outings with friends.
She is currently detained at Nansana Police station.
Cases of own kidnap have this year been rampant and many have been arrested for faking own kidnaps with intentions of collecting money from their caretakers.
In June, police arrested a one Miriam Kusubira, 46, the pastor’s wife that had claimed was kidnapped with aim of collecting 50million ransom.
Kusubira was reported missing when she had left her home in Masajja to pay for a piece of land on Mityana Road.
Police revealed that Kusubira might have connived with a boyfriend to con Pastor Shadrach Kusubira to give out Shs50m.
