KAMPALA– Kira Magistrate has on Wednesday July 18 remanded a gymnastics instructor, Hitiyaremye Venuste 32, to Luzira prison for stealing €37,000 (about Shs166m) belonging to his boss.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire on Wednesday said the suspect was arrested in a hideout at Rockie Guest House located in Old Kampala after snatching money from his boss’s vehicle.

The suspect on June 1, 2018 betrayed the trust of his master.

After carrying out the crime, Hitiyaremye reportedly hatched a plan to travel abroad with the money. However, police say investigations coupled with high level intelligence carried out by Kira Division Police team helped nab the suspect before he could escape to Burundi.

Upon interrogating the suspect who was remorseful, confessed to the crime. Hitiyaremye disclosed that he had stolen the money belonging to his boss, Fr. Hubat Twajirayezu of Don Bosco Children and Life Mission (CALM).

The organization is headed by Salesian missionaries and actively engages in improving the programs and services to better meet the needs of youth.

However, part of the stolen money and other exhibits were recovered from him.
The exhibits recovered include a new laptop, 13090 Euros, 5000 rw francs and Shs192,000 among other items.

The suspect was arraigned before Kira Magistrates Court where he was charged of theft contrary to Section 254(1) and 261 of the Penal Code Act and remanded to Luzira prison.
