KAMPALA – Zahrah Luyirika, the National Unity Platform Party – NUP candidate was on Tuesday declared winner of the KCCA – Speakership post after polling 43 votes against NRM’s Shamim Namusisi’s eight.
Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ayo Miriam Okello declared Luyirika, the Woman Councillor representing Makindye West winner in an exercise – which attracted 52 voters.
The KCCA comprises 54 members, one councillor – James Mubiru didn’t participate because he was imprisoned on charges for alleged illegal possession of attires that are a preserve of the armed forces while Lord Mayor – Erias Lukwago abstained from the exercise.
On the same day, Nasur Masaba – NUP won the post of KCCA Deputy Speaker after beating NRM’s Allan Mwesigwa. Forty-two councillors voted in favour of Masaba while nine picked Mwesigwa.
NUP won most of the elective local and parliamentary posts in Buganda in the recently concluded general elections.
The post of speaker – who is mandated to preside over council sittings – was introduced during the last term.
