MASAKA – The Anti-Corruption Court convicted the Masaka District Senior Internal Auditor, John Bahati Ssempiira, after pleading guilty to soliciting and obtaining a bribe of Shs1 million from a teacher Emmanuel Kiwumulo Mwanja, under the guise of helping him access his gratuity.
The Magistrate Grade One, H/W Moses Nabende, who convicted Ssempiira, read to him the charges which he confessed and told the court that he had entered into a plea bargaining agreement with the Prosecution.
According to the agreement, the parties agreed on a fine of Shs500,000 on each of the two charges or a two-year jail term should he fail to pay. The Shs1m that was got from Mr Mwanja was to be given back.
After tendering the agreement, HW Nabende warned the prosecution against agreeing to ridiculous sentences.
As part of the orders of the court, the convict was barred from holding public office for a period of 10 years.
