KAMPALA – The former speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Dan Kidega, is fighting for his life in hospital following a serious car accident at the weekend.
The vehicle Kidega was travelling in had a head on collision with a FUSO Lorry on Saturday night, leaving him with serious brain, arm and leg injuries. The specific place where the accident occurred has not been identified.
According to Kidega’s brother and DP president Norbert Mao, the former EALA speaker suffered bleeding on the brain and is currently admitted to TMR Hospital in Naalya, Kampala.
“Dan’s accident was serious. He had a head on collision with a FUSO Lorry. His car went off the road and rolled. He was taken to TMR Hospital in Naalya. He is unconscious. Injured his head, right arm and left leg. According to Dr. Erasmus Okello, his brain rotated a bit on impact and got grazed on the rough surface of the skull. That led some bleeding in the brain. Scan shows that he’s out of danger,” he said on Sunday.
“Due to injury caused to his chest blood seeped into his lungs as he coughed and so he needs life support to enable him get enough oxygen. The doctor says they have sedated him so that his brain can rest. There’s no need for surgery on the brain. He is expected to heal naturally with the support of medication. He is expected to be conscious after two days. There’s no bone fracture. All the injuries are soft tissue. Doctors can treat us but it is God that heals. Let’s lift Dan up in prayer. It is well!” he added.
Kidega was EALA speaker from December 2014 until June 2017. As of August 2020, he served as the chairman of Atiak Sugar Factory, in Amuru District.
