KAMPALA — The Electoral Commission has suspended all political meetings in Kampala and 11 other districts and cities — ostensibly to contain spread of coronavirus.

The development was announced by EC chairman,Justice Simon Byabakama —quoting the surging COVID-19 cases and continued processions by Presidential Candidates.

In a social media post, Paul Bukenya, the EC spokesman confirmed the suspension of the political campaigns and listed the affected areas.

The affected districts include Kampala, Masaka, Wakiso, Greater Mukono, Jinja, Mbarara, and Kalungu.

The others include
Kazo, Kabarole, Jinja Tororo and Luwero.

“The EC has suspended campaign meetings in districts/cities categorised by Ministry of Health as having high spread of Covid19. From 26/12/20, no campaign meetings will be held in Mbarara, Kabarole, Luwero, Kasese, Masaka, Wakiso, Kabarole, Jinja, Kalungu, Kazo, Kampala & Tororo,” Mr. Bukenya wrote in a tweet.

Commentators have since slammed the EC for using directives without consulting stakeholders.
