KAMPALA – The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has applauded the Government of South Korea for extending support to Uganda for the fight against Covid-19.

Kadaga was thrilled on hearing from the South Korean Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Ha Byung-Kyoo that US$4 million has been allocated to boost health facilities handling Covid-19 cases.

“This is very important support you are giving us, because besides the gaps in the health facilities, many people do not yet believe that coronavirus is real. We need a lot of health education in that area,” said Kadaga.

Kadaga made these remarks during a meeting with Byung-Kyoo on Wednesday 7, October 2020 at Parliament.

Byung-Kyoo told Kadaga that his government through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is in talks with the Ministry of Health on the plan to roll out the programme in selected parts of the country.

He also revealed South Korea’s plan to support six selected vocational training institutions in Uganda.

Kadaga said supporting vocational training is timely owing to many Ugandans who have embraced it. She urged the South Korean government to consider supporting local community groups with equipment.

“In rural communities we have skilled people who are training groups of people but they lack equipment, so supporting them with items such as sewing machines can yield much for an ordinary person,” said Kadaga.

Byung-Kyoo noted that South Korea through KOICA is able to extend financial support for such causes but requires community groups to be organised under Non-Governmental Organisations.
