KAMPALA – India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s July 2018 visit to Uganda has started to yield fruits, with the delivery of 44 vehicles as promised in his bag of trade deals and goodies.

At the Omoro district headquarters on Wednesday, 7 October 2020, one of the trucks, a water bowser, was delivered by Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, to ecstatic district officials led by the Chairperson, Mr Douglas Okello.

These and many others, said Oulanyah, manifests the growing bilateral ties between India and Uganda.

“In July 2018, the Indian Prime Minister came to Uganda and he pledged to help Uganda with 44 vehicles; my interest was in the water bowser, which I lobbied and got on behalf of Omoro district, working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” said Oulanyah, at a brief ceremony held at the district headquarters.

Oulanyah traced his relations with Prime Minister Modi, which he said dates back to 2008 when Modi was Chief Minister of Gujarat State.

“We met in 2008 when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat State and we became friends. So, when he came to Uganda, he asked me to join him in meetings with the business community and other undertakings,” he said.

To develop Uganda, he said, such bilateral relations need to be strengthened to the maximum benefit of Uganda and her international partners.

Oulanyah tasked the district chairperson with ensuring there is seamless service delivery to the satisfaction of residents and cautioned staff against unexplained absence from duty and late coming, vices he said drag the district and jeopardise service delivery.

The Chief Administrative Officer, Mr Nicholas Ogwang, said the equipment will enable the district maintain at least 300 kilometres of road network.
