KAMPALA – Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has on Saturday 19 joined the rest of the World to commemorate the World Clean-Up Day.

The City Authority will also launch the Weyonje Cleanup Campaign in Kampala.

Among the activities lined up, National Water and Sewerage (NWSC), KCCA and Water for People are launching Briquettes Processing from Waste and Commissioning of a Faecal Sludge Dumping point at the NWSC Lubigi sewage treatment plant to showcase some of the ongoing sustainable waste management practises in the city.

The Weyonje Cleanup Campaign is aimed at;

  • Promoting City Cleanliness, attractiveness, livability and ambience
  • Reducing pollution and improving environmental quality;
  • Reducing flooding resulting from clogged drainage systems;
  • Reducing public health risks including disease epidemics

Mobilising customers to join the days activities in their homes, Kampala Water General Manager Mahmood Lutaaya urged city dwellers to be part of the historic event.

“The Weyonge Campaign is a great approach for protecting our water supply sources and promoting sustainable waste management resources. Many of us have seen the lake green with pollutants. NWSC spends alot of money to treat this water to the required WHO standards before we deliver it to our customers. We urge our customers to clean up their communities in a bid to protect our environment,” he said.
