KAMPALA – The State Minister for Gender and Culture, Peace Mutuuzo has revealed that over 10,000 cases of gender-based violence were reported between the months of January and April 2020.

Mutuuzo made the remarks while being hosted on NBS TV on Wednesday, June 10.

According to her, the numbers surpass the 3,000 cases that were reported in 2019.

“People need to understand whether you are female or male, everyone matters,” she said.

Mutuzo said while empowering women and educating girls, they should be told about their rights.

“We should sensitise them to be responsible when dealing with men,” she said.

The minister further revealed that they have institutions in place that are handling gender-based violence cases.

“We have shelters for the victims. We are doing sensitization campaigns for girls,” said Mutuuzo.

“COVID-19 is not the only thing threatening life. Gender-based violence is threatening life as well. The government is aware of all this & is doing what it takes to stop this vice,” she noted.
