KAMPALA — The Ministry of Health has late Monday night confirmed 12 new COVID-19 positive cases from 1743 samples that were tested from various Points of Entry on Monday May 18.

The 12 confirmed cases are Ugandan nationals, a development that takes  Uganda’s total to 260.

“Today,18 May, 2020, 12 new COVID-19 cases confirmed from 1,743 samples of truck drivers. All new cases are Ugandans. The total confirmed COVID-19 cases are now 260,” the Ministry of Heath wrote.

32 foreign truck drivers who tested positive for COVID-19 were turned back to their respective countries.

Addressing the country on Monday, President Museveni who extended the lockdown for 14 days said the only problem that we are going to eliminate now is the delay in the testing.

“We shall now not allow any driver to enter Uganda or leave the border until their result is known,” announced President Museveni.

The current rapid testing kits (that produce results in 32 hours) are now being concentrated at Mutukula border point, where traffic is lower than other borders.

He assured that Uganda is more prepared to fight the deadly coronavirus, with the efforts by “our scientists” to develop a way of killing the virus with “dedicated medicine” under way.
