MOROTO – Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in Karamoja is currently facing a big challenge of protecting wild animals against massive poaching by the Karamojong.

Mr. Gilbrado Edyau Ecodu, the senior warden officer in charge of Bokora, Matheniko game reserve said that the Karamojong have launched massive illegal poaching of animals in the protected game reserves in an
excuse of the current country lockdown that has blocked them from doing other businesses to support their families.

“From the month of April when the President announced the country lockdown over Covid-19, we are experiencing a lot of poaching in the protected areas and they do it in secret ways,” he said.

He, however, said UWA has intensified patrols in the park and deploying more personnel to protect the animals from the poachers.

He appealed the local community to help protect the animals saying its when they will benefit a lot from revenue brought by tourists.

Last week the high court sitting in Nwoya district sentenced four poachers to seven years imprisonment.

The poachers include Richard Oroch, Michael Jamony, Innocent Parmu and Daglas Janeta.
