KAMPALA – Police have hailed a security guard who on Wednesday evening disarmed an armed robber at Fort Bet in Bwaise, a Kampala suburb.

According to police, the robber, who was armed with an AK47, attacked the office of the betting company at around 8 pm and fired in the air to scare the workers so as to hand over money to him.

The security guard, who is said to have hidden behind the door during the attack, grabbed the armed man from behind and wrestled him to the ground, holding the gun tightly.

“The suspect was able free himself, but the guard had held the rifle so firm. The suspect abandoned the gun and fled from the betting room. He disappeared, but we are using evidence he left at the scene to identify him,” Kampala Metropolitan police deputy spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire said.

He said they were later the AK47 rifle with a police number UG Pol 565902694-32493.

The incident comes four days after President Museveni on Sunday claimed that criminal gangs in Kampala Metropolitan area and Western Uganda have been wiped out and their members arrested.

He said the gangs had killed 13 people, injured two and robbed Shs24m. Museveni said 20 members of these groups have been arrested, eight charged in courts of law, and four guns, Shs10 million and three motorcycles have also been recovered in the police operations.
