Tears as Tororo student drowns in River Malaba

MALABA – A second-year student of construction and building at Tororo Technical Institute Mella has drowned in River Malaba.

The deceased identified as Stephen Enapat 22, drowned on Saturday around 11:30 am while they were swimming in the flooded River Malaba.

According to the school principal Daniel Mwesigwa, the deceased and the friends under their association ‘Teso Students Development Association’ had gone to tilt their land they have hired from the neighborhood and after their work they proceeded to the river to clean themselves and its reported that at the course of washing their legs he slid off to the deep waters.

“Its unfortunate situation that we had lease expected because even last Friday we had an assembly where we requested each student to be extra careful with whatever they are doing because examinations are nearing’’ he sorrowfully said.

He told the daily monitor that they have mounted a search and even gone ahead to stake some money to reward anyone who comes across the dead body.

Mr. Mwesigwa added that they have liaised with some of the individuals who are experts in swimming and they are positive.

Meanwhile the chairperson Board of Directors of the Institute Mr. Deogratius Osiu disclosed that they have also liaised with the Kenyan authorities who have also mounted a search.

The incidence occurs after River Malaba bank busted displacing several families and destroying crops that had been grown along the river banks.
