Death toll in Rubirizi fuel fire accident rises to 23

RUBIRIZI – The Police together with UPDF soldiers on Monday retrieved more 13 bodies at Kyambura Trading Centre in Rubirizi District, bringing to 23 the number of victims of the Sunday fuel fire accident

The accident occurred after a tanker truck lost control and rammed into two commuter taxis and a saloon car, exploding in flames.

Police had initially put the death toll at 10 but on Monday, the security agencies in an operation rescued more bodies, some of which were found trapped under the vehicle. More bodies are expected to be retrieved.

There was a stampede in the morning at around 9:00am when the wreckage of the fuel tank caught fire as security forces tried to move it. Three people sustained injuries and taken to Rugazi Health Center IV. The injured included Bunyaruguru Member of Parliament John Twesigye Ntamuhira.

The Minister for General Duties in the Office of The Prime Minister, Ms Mary Karoro Okurut, who was at the accident scene, promised government support to the victims.

The incident according to police, happened at around 4pm at Kyambura Trading Centre in Ruburizi district when a fuel tanker from Mbarara lost control and rammed into two commuter taxis and a saloon car.
