ENTEBBE – Nkumba University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wilson Muyinda Mande has urged the government to reduce taxes imposed on private institutions of learning.

Prof.Muyinda made these remarks during the launch of the University’s Silver Jubilee celebrations at Nkumba University.

Nkumba University is celebrating its silver-jubilee marking a quarter century of the University’s existence.

According to Prof Muyinda, the institution only funded by money from parents who also pay in installments which affects the pace at which the University operates.

It is against this background therefore that the Vice Chancellor of Nkumba University called upon the government to reduce on the high taxes that he says are imposed on private universities since they don’t get any assistance from the government.

Buganda’s Minister Waggwa Nsibirwa who represented the Katikiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga says that existing for 25 years as a private institution is a big milestone because it is not easy to run a private institution for over 20 years without any assistance from the government.

Minister Waggwa Nsibirwa also extolled Nkumba University students for their good discipline which he says has pleased his Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi (II) who will celebrate his 26th coronation anniversary at Nkumba University Main campus based in Entebbe.

He urged Nkumba University to cooperate with the Kingdom of Buganda in preparation for the 26th coronation anniversary of Kabaka Mutebi that will be celebrated on July 31, 2019.

According to David Christopher Kasasa, the Dean of students, Nkumba started way back in 1952 as a kindergarten then evolved into a primary school to a secondary school which then graduated into the college of Commerce and finally acquired university status in 1994.

He adds that Nkumba is one of the 10 chartered universities in Uganda and he also thanked parents who invest in their children’s education noting that some parents are not in such a privileged position to educate their children up to university level.

The main celebrations to mark Nkumba University’s silver jubilee celebrations slated for  September 31 2019.
