PRETORIA – The National Identification National and Registration Authority (NIRA) has started issuing National IDs to Ugandans in the Diaspora.

The Executive Director NIRA, Ms Judy Obitre – Gama, and a team of four officers from NIRA Headquarters made a three-day working visit, from June 19 – 21 to Pretoria to train and equip the Ugandan Mission with the capacity to register Ugandans in its area of accreditation.

The Head of the Consular Section at the Mission, Mr. J.J Kivuna, welcomed the team to South Africa. He informed them that Ugandans from this area of accreditation have severally informed the Mission of the many problems they go through back home due to lack of Identity Cards.

The Mission, he further informed, has been relaying this information back home, constantly requesting for this service to be extended to the Ugandans in this region. The Mission, he said, was now extremely happy that the equipment and necessary training had finally arrived.

In her speech to the officers selected for the training, the ED explained the mandated roles of NIRA and reiterated the importance of each Ugandan being registered and hence having an Identity card.

She handed over two complete sets of Registration Equipment as well as various educative manuals to the Mission.

The NIRA team carried out a very successful training of the responsible Mission staff and indeed, a pilot registration of over 70 enthusiastic Ugandans was successfully carried out.

The Mission is now set to Register Ugandans in its area of accreditation and as well facilitate their receiving of IDs.
