Namirembe Guest House collapses: kills two, several still trapped inside

KAMPALA – At least two people have died after Namirembe Guest House, the building near Namirembe Cathedral, collapsed during the Tuesday afternoon downpour also injuring several.

Those that have been taken out, several are in a critical condition and they are being treated at the Church of Uganda-run Namirembe Hospital in Kampala.

Without divulging details, Uganda Red Cross spokesperson, Irene Nakasiita, confirmed the building collapsed and stated that the deaths still remain under two.

By press time, Gen. Elly Tumwine the Minister for Security was at the scene as efforts to rescue those trapped inside is ongoing.

The heavy rains have also hit several areas of the city centre, causing massive flooding and congestion.

A number of areas have this afternoon, flooded; roads cut off and destroyed in some parts.

In our city tour, the most affected villages were; Kisenya, Lubowa, Lufuka, Kazinga, Kulekaana, Bunzari, Masajja, Kibira B, Lwasa bridge way triangle, Kabuuma, Katongo, Kikajjo, Katwe, Makindye Ssabagabo among others.

The flash floods affected businesses and households as property and merchandise were swept by the overflow.

Many people have been displaced while others have had to seek shelter in neighboring villages with relatives or friends.

Schools too have been affected by the heavy downpour.
