BUGIRI – As campaigns in new municipalities and by-elections close, President Yoweri Museveni, FDC’s Dr. Kizza Besigye and Kyandondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine could cross paths today in Bugiri where a crucial election is slated for July 27.
According to a statement from the NRM Communication’s Officer Rogers Mulindwa, Museveni, the party’s national chairman will hold one rally at Bukooli Technical School in Bugiri on Wednesday [today] afternoon for Mr Francis Oketcho.
On his part, Dr. Besigye will lead a team of senior party officials to mobilise for Eunice Namatende, the party’s flag bearer. Kyagulanyi, although a fairly new MP is a crowd puller being a popular singer. In the recent past he has been instrumental in helping candidates win elections. Kyagulanyi is in Bugiri to support a last minute vote hunt for JEEMA’s Asuman Basalirwa, another candidate in the highly contested race for Bugiri Municipality’s parliamentary seat.
A combined force of the Uganda Police and Military Police have Wednesday July 25, raided a hotel where Kyagulanyi is staying in Bugiri and several members of his team have been arrested.
Last Thursday Ramanthan Walyendo, a member of Mr Basalirwa’s security detail was shot dead during a campaign rally and was on Friday laid to rest. Basalirwa says the bullet Walyendo took was meant for him.
“It wasn’t a stray bullet because a stray bullet can’t hit in the chest. Up to now police has failed to single out the shooter yet the [Bugiri] DPC was on ground and was in command. The tyres of the trailer I was travelling in were shot and flattened,” Basalirwa said.
On the other hand, the NRM in a statement dated Tuesday July 24, accused the opposition of stabbing their supporters.
