KIRYANDONDO – A UPDF soldier is currently detained at Kiryandongo Central Police Station after he shot dead an employee at Karuma dam on Monday afternoon.

The unidentified soldier guards the offices of Chinese construction firm Sinohydro, which is constructing the power dam.

Trouble started when Ronald Kisitu, who is the head of the company’s security, went to intervene in a case in which the soldier had allegedly arrested another employee for allegedly stealing construction materials at the site.

The other employees were allegedly refusing the soldier from taking him away after he reportedly caught him redhanded stealing angle bars. A scuffle then reportedly ensued between the workers and the soldier.

At this moment, Kisitu is said to have attempted to stop the chaos from where the soldier pulled the trigger, killing Kisitu in the process.

When contacted, the public relations officer at the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd, Mr Mohammad Lubogo, confirmed the incident and said Kisitu was accidentally shot as he attempted to quell a riot between staff and the soldier.

The body has been taken to Kiryandongo Hospital for postmortem.
