KAMPALA – The military spokesman on Tuesday night remained tight-liped on the details surrounding the fate of former Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura as reports emerged that he was now under arrest at the UPDF Officer’s Mess in Kololo, in Kampala.

Brig. Richard Karemire, the Defence Ministry/UPDF spokesman said events surrounding the fate of the former police chief, a 4-star military general were still “very confidential”.

“We shall tell you (Media) in the right time,” said the amiable Brig. Karemire.

PML Daily could not establish whether reports that Gen. Kayihura was now in custody were entirely correct.

However, senior journalist Andrew Mwenda and some media houses reported on Tuesday night that the former police chief was in detention.

A combined force on Tuesday evening was repirted to have searched a premier hotel — The Courtyard International Hotel, located in Lyantonde on Mbarara-Masaka Rd, where the former IGP reportedly stayed for two days.

According to reports that emerged on Tuesday evening, the the combined force included military personell from the Special Forces Command, the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence and Internal Security Organisation.

“They cordoned off the hotel, confiscated all our mobile phones and other gadgets and searched the hotel. They demanded that we show them where Kayihura was,” a hotel manager told PML Daily Tuesday evening.

Hotel proprietor Mr Justus Kyabahwa, in a telephone conversation on Tuesday evening confirmed the cordon and search operation at his facility but did not disclose any other details as briefed by his staff about the military operation or whether the former IGP Kayihura stayed at the facility.

“We do not disclose client information to the public or the media ,” Mr Kyabahwa told PML Daily by telephone.

Gen. Kayihura was dropped as police chief earlier this year after 13 years at the helm of the force.
