A witch doctor in Kayunga District was on Friday handed a life sentence by Mukono High Court after pleading guilty to cutting off a man’s head for human sacrifice.

Justice Margaret Mutonyi handed out the sentence to Mr Godfrey Kizza after he admitted cutting off Saul Kajura’s head in 2016.

Justice Mutonyi said the sentence was to ensure that Kizza does not return to society, arguing that he was dangerous.

Prosecution states that in 2016, Kizza killed Kajura, a 19-year-old crime preventer attached to Kitimbwa Police Post, and thereafter went into hiding but was arrested last year from Nakasongola district. Kajura’s head was found in Kizza’s shrine by police, alongside other two human skulls .

“My lord, I plead guilty to the offence of human sacrifice but I committed the offence while being possessed by spirits. I was brought up by guardians, who were witchdoctors and in one incident, I saw them sacrifice a human being, that is why I grew up knowing it is okay to kill a person,” Kizza told court.

However, the judge argued that life imprisonment was already a lenient punishment, adding that she would have sentenced him to death.
