Police in Mbale on Saturday afternoon forced Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye to abandon, midway, a function he was attending and leave.
Dr Besigye had been invited to among other things talk ethics, discipline and goodwill to Rotaractors, who are mainly medical students of Busitema University.
Management of Mbale Resort were reportedly ordered to stop the function or ask the guest of honour, Dr Besigye to leave.
“I am sure when you invited me, you knew you were taking a risk. Unfortunately that risk has come to pass. I have been told there are gentlemen (police) down here who have ordered that I must leave. That is why I have been requested by organisers to give my speech now and leave. So I will just do that and leave because I am your guest” Dr Besigye told the gathering, adding: In other circumstances, I am sure, you know I would act differently.”
Dr Besigye left before cutting cake and having dinner with his hosts.
