Some of the promoted UPDF officers pose with their families after the ceremony at army headquarters in Mbuya on Monday.

Outspoken senior army officer Maj Gen Kasirye Ggwanga on Monday did not show up for the UPDF pipping ceremony in which he was to be decorated following his promotion from the rank of Brigadier to that of Major General.

A total of 62 UPDF officers were promoted in a ceremony held at Mbuya Barracks but Ggwanga, who is expected to later retire from the army this year, did not show up.

Army spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire later explained that Brig Ggwanga had communicated his absence over other engagements.

Ggwanga had previously retired from the army, but later asked to return to active service, saying: “I cannot handle civilian life”.

President Museveni last week approved the promotion of 1,609 officers to various ranks.

Kasirye Ggwanga was promoted to Maj Gen and will retire from the UPDF this year.
