Disaster in Mbarara as hotel collapses, many feared dead after heavy downpour

Residents look on as police attempt to rescue people from the flood waters and the collapsed building.

MBARARA – The westen Uganda town of Mbarara town woke up to shock on Thursday morning when a building under construction at Rwizi Arch Hotel collapsed following heavy downpour leading to a disaster at the hotel with guests affected.

The police spent the rest of Wednesday night in rescue efforts as more than 20 people inluding guests are feared trapped in the collapsed hotel, eye witnesses said. Reports that PML Daily has received indicate that so far eight people have been confirmed dead.

The rain that struck the area on Wednesday evening lasted about three hours (from around 6pm-9pm). Eye witness reported that running water around the same area swept unspecified number of people who were traveling on boda bodas.

Police had by Thusday morning recovered bodies of three Bodaboda cyclists including  of a one Vincent Mubangizi. They were trapped in trenches. The passrngers on are feared to have died. Rwizi Police Spokesperson Samson Kasasira says the police continues in the rescue efforts Thursday morning.

A source speaking to PML Daily stated: “Rwizi arch hotel constructed some structures on top of the water channel. Now coz of the overflow, those structures were swept away.”
